How do you maintain a shuffleboard?

Often you have to walk to the attic if you want a game sjoelen. The shuffleboard usually gets a place in the house, where you don't come much.

How annoying is it when you find out that the wood is warped, or that the shuffleboard no longer slides smoothly through the shuffleboard. Don't panic, because with these handy tips you can prevent this and ensure that your shuffleboard is properly maintained.

Temperature

Shuffleboard is (usually) made of wood, so it's important that you treat it the same as other wood products. Although we choose the most suitable wood for making shuffleboards, it will always work, which means that it expands and contracts with temperature changes.

Therefore, store your shuffleboard in a place that is not too hot or too cold, or where the temperature often changes. This prevents the shuffleboard from warping.

Stand upright

Another way to prevent your shuffleboard from warping is to place it upright, with the shuffleboard side facing down.

Store moisture and dust free

We all know what happens when wood comes into contact with moisture. The wood will bulge and warp. The same goes for shuffleboards. So don't place the shuffleboard in a room where it can get damp, such as in the shed.

To protect your shuffleboard even more, you can also store it in a special shuffleboard cover. This way you protect the shuffleboard against dirt, dust and light and it stays beautiful for a long time.

What not to do? Clean the shuffleboard with a detergent.

How do you smooth a shuffleboard?

When you buy a new shuffleboard, it's likely that it won't be as slippery as you were used to with the old one. That's right. Shuffleboard has been sliding over your old shuffleboard for years, which has polished the playing field, as it were. So if you play more, the new shuffleboard will automatically become smoother.

If the playing field of your shuffleboard becomes a bit rougher over time, there are several ways to smooth it out again:

  • potato starch or Shulpowder. The only and very best solution. Do not sprinkle too much, because then the stones will fly out of the bin.

Wipe the shuffleboard with a damp cloth and dry it thoroughly. Then sprinkle a little bit of powder over the playing field and slide a few shuffleboards through the shuffleboard. After a few times, your shuffleboard will play like new again.

Don't do the following

  • Furniture spray is sometimes advised in other places. That is sometimes done from the factory, but then preferably not anymore. Why? Furniture spray ensures that the playing field becomes greasy, with the result that the bricks also become greasy. This causes the stones to stick quickly. This obviously does not promote sliding.
  • Bird seed or peppercorns. You can also read these tips in other places, but don't! It does provide a layer between the tray and the discs, which makes the stones slide better, but the disadvantage is that the playing field of the shuffleboard then wears away.

How can I clean my shul stones?

Shuffleboards can become somewhat dirty or greasy after frequent use. Using furniture wax on the shuffleboard, as some websites advise, is bad advice. This actually makes the discs more oily and hinders sliding.

Here are a few steps to clean them properly:

  • Wipe dry: Start by wiping the stones dry with a soft cloth to remove dust and loose dirt.
  • Sand lightly: If the stones still feel dirty or sticky, you can lightly sand them with very fine sandpaper. Do this gently and evenly to prevent the stones from becoming uneven or wearing too much.
  • potato starch: Shovel powder or potato starch can help to make the stones less greasy and improve the sliding properties. Apply a thin layer to the stones and rub with a soft cloth.

To give you an idea: in official shul matches, the stones are replaced every 10 matches.
