Celluloid vs Plastic
The safety and health of humans and animals is also of great importance to the table tennis world. We at Heemskerk, of course, fully agree with that. That is why, from 2016, the international table tennis association, the ITTF, has decided that celluloid balls may no longer be made and that the entire table tennis sport must be switched to plastic.
An understandable decision that was not easy to implement, because the quality of the table tennis balls was of course not allowed to suffer. Now, a few years later, celluloid balls are no longer being made and all table tennis clubs have switched to plastic balls.
For a number of years now, you will only find plastic table tennis balls in the Heemskerk range. When purchasing your table tennis balls, pay attention to the material of which the ball is made. The problem with celluloid balls is in producing the balls and not using them. It therefore has no consequences for your health for you as a user/player.
There are small differences between the two materials in terms of playing characteristics, quality and durability. For example, the plastic ball is slightly slower and bounces better, so that the game can easily be followed by the public. They are also slightly more expensive to produce. What are good table tennis balls?
The quality of table tennis balls is indicated in stars. Balls with 1 star are already suitable for recreational use. If you use the table tennis balls more intensively, you can opt for the balls with 2 stars. Only the best table tennis balls get 3 stars. These balls are used during competition matches.
Which table tennis balls you can choose best depends on how you are going to use them. Do you play once in a while, at the campsite for example? Then our fun table tennis balls or the balls with 1 star are just right for you. Do you have one in your office table tennis table on which your colleagues play a game of table tennis every day? How are table tennis balls made?
Making table tennis balls starts with small plastic discs. They are pressed into half balls by a machine in hot water. Then the hemispheres are glued together to form a table tennis ball. Finally, the balls are made perfectly round and tested, so that you always receive the best table tennis ball.
When testing the table tennis balls, the weight, size and roundness are taken into account. This is done per table tennis ball. If a ball does not meet the requirements, it will not reach the customer. The sorting of the table tennis balls is also done per ball. The balls are classified in 1, 2 or 3 stars.
